The Planning Commission is
setting up a "Working group on 'Women's Agency and Empowerment" for
the Twelfth Five Year Plan under the Chairpersonship of Secretary, Ministry
of Women and Child Development. The Member Secretary of the Commission
has been nominated as the Member of the above Working Group.

Ms. Yasmeen Abrar, Hon'ble
Chairperson, National Commission for Women visited Farukhabad of Uttar
Pradesh in connection with Tanya murder case, Kayanegang, Farukhabad on 12th
May, 2011. During the visit she will meet the D.M. , S.S.P. and other local
government authorties to discuss the issues relating to women. She will also
discuss about the pending cases of Uttar Pradesh in NCW with the concern
authorities about the action taken in this regard.

A delegation met the Chairperson over a representation calling upon for
immediate intervention on the incident wherein women, children and farmers were
subjected to atrocities by the local administration on the pretext of
lathichage / use of tear gas on the mob which had gathered to ambicaly who
where preventing against the confiscation of the land by the Government.

National Commission for
Women has taken suo-moto cognizance of a press report which appeared in
Navbharat Times (Delhi Edition) with the caption "ट्रेनिंग स्कूल में लेडी
कांस्टेबलों का यौन शोषण, ११ प्रेग्नेंट हुई " dated 27 April, 2011. Reportedly,
women trainees allegedlly sexually exploited by the Chief Training
Inspector in Kolhapur Police Training Academy, Maharashtra. It was also
been reported that mostly unmarried trainees get pregnent in the academy.
NCW is deeply anguished on this report. Ms. Yasmeen Abrar, Chairperson issued
letters to the Chief Minister and the Home Minister of Maharashtra to look into
the matter and apprise the Commission about the actual facts and action taken
by the concern authorities at the earliest.
National Commission for
Women constituted an Inquiry Committee to inquire into the incident,
wherein two sisters who had confined themselves to their apartment here for
over six months and one of the sisters died on Wednesday morning in Section-29,
Noida, Uttar Pradesh.

Dr. Girija Vyas, Chairperson of the
Commission conducted a
Public Hearing in South Campus of Delhi University on 22nd March,
2011 on the issue of Increasing rape and assault cases against women and
especially girl students in the city of Delhi.
The National Commission for Women celebrated
the Centenary of International Women’s Day, 2011 on 11th March, 2011. The theme
of the centenary celebration is “Access to Justice”
During this occasion, the
Commission proposes to sign the Memorandum of understanding (MOU) with
Delhi Police and different NGO’s in achieving the goal.
